Kickstart scheme employability

Supplytrain, whose mission is to support young people into a career with a company that cares, has showcased its commitment to developing its own people by joining The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focused on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.

Supplytrain’s Managing Director, Phil Golding, said:

“As a recruitment agency focused on helping forward-thinking businesses to recruit and develop young people through supportive entry-level jobs, apprenticeship and graduate schemes, we thought it was also important to demonstrate we live these values internally and are committed to the same ethos of developing people in-house.”

The 5% Club was initiated by Leo Quinn Group Group CEO of Balfour Beatty in 2013. It is a movement of more than 700 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers. Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Members are also asked to publicly report their progress in their Annual Report. Existing members range from SMEs to FTSEs and cover several diverse industries, from engineering through to the legal sector.

“16% of our workforce are already undertaking apprenticeship training and we have employed a number of staff through the Kickstart scheme too. However, we can always do more as we really see the business benefits of recruiting for attitude and training for skill. Joining the 5% Club will help to support us stay true to our mission.”

Gill Cronin, Director of Operations of The 5% Club said, “We’re delighted to welcome Supplytrain into membership. The 5% Club provides a fantastic network of HR professionals, sharing and learning from each other. All our members share an ethos of creating a skilled workforce through ‘earn and learn’ development programmes, helping people develop meaningful career paths.”

Supplytrain is looking forward to working closely with the 5% club to network with organisations that share our ethos and get the latest best practice advice so that we can continue to support social mobility and give our staff the opportunity to fulfil their in-work potential.
