Supplytrain CIC has supported Phase Electrical in launching a new apprenticeship programme, helping the business attract, assess and recruit four new apprentices from the local community.
Supplytrain managed the initial recruitment campaign, advertising the opportunities to local candidates and attracting 45 applications from people aged 16 to 32. Candidates were then sifted against key criteria including attitude, potential and work readiness, ensuring Phase Electrical could focus its time on candidates with the right qualities and a genuine interest in building a long-term career.
Nine candidates were subsequently invited to an assessment centre at Phase Electrical’s Training Centre, organised and supported by Supplytrain.
The assessment day gave candidates the opportunity to learn more about Phase Electrical, meet the team and demonstrate their communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills through interviews and a practical team challenge.
The quality of applicants impressed the team so much that Phase Electrical, together with Louise McNaughton, who leads the Training Department, doubled the number of apprenticeship places on offer from two to four.
“The standard of applicants was outstanding and made the final decision incredibly difficult. We originally planned to recruit two apprentices, but the quality of candidates impressed us so much that we decided to double the intake and offer four apprenticeship places instead.”
Supplytrain understood exactly what we were looking for and made the recruitment process straightforward for us. The assessment centre gave us a great opportunity to see the candidates in action and really understand their personalities, strengths and potential.
Having Supplytrain supporting us beyond recruitment is also hugely valuable. We want these apprentices to build long-term careers with Phase Electrical, and having the right support around them will help us achieve that.”
The successful candidates will begin with a four-week trial from 1 September, before progressing onto their formal apprenticeship in October. Their first year will include rotations through the trade counter and warehouse, providing a broad understanding of the business before they progress into specialist areas such as sales, account management or marketing, depending on their strengths and the needs of the business.
Supplytrain’s involvement will not end with the recruitment process. The organisation will continue to support Phase Electrical and its apprentices throughout their apprenticeship journey, helping ensure the new recruits receive the guidance, structure and development they need to succeed.
“We were delighted to support Phase Electrical with the launch of its new apprenticeship programme. From the outset, the team had a clear vision for what they wanted to achieve, and our role was to make the recruitment process as straightforward and effective as possible.
The quality of candidates at the assessment centre was fantastic, and the fact that Phase Electrical increased the number of apprenticeship places from two to four is a great reflection of the strength of the recruitment campaign.
We’re looking forward to continuing to support both Phase Electrical and its new apprentices throughout their journey. The recruitment process is only the beginning – our aim is to help these apprentices develop, grow in confidence and build successful long-term careers.”
The programme is designed to benefit both Phase Electrical and the apprentices themselves – developing a pipeline of skilled talent for the future while providing individuals with the opportunity to build rewarding careers within the electrical industry.
For Supplytrain, the programme demonstrates the value of providing businesses with end-to-end apprenticeship support – from helping to attract and assess candidates through to supporting apprentices as they develop their skills and progress within the workplace.
With four new apprentices preparing to join the business, Supplytrain and Phase Electrical have established a strong foundation for a programme that aims to become an important part of the company’s approach to developing future talent.
